SpeedSUVs.com — Hyundai has officially taken the wraps off the highly anticipated 2027 Hyundai Elantra, debuting under its South Korean “Avante” nameplate at the 2026 Busan Auto Show this week. This marks the first major redesign for the compact sedan since 2021, showcasing a dramatic and futuristic styling shift that looks like it stepped straight off a science-fiction movie set. The radical design changes span both the exterior and interior, positioning the Elantra as one of the most visually striking vehicles in its segment.
The debut of the new Avante in South Korea comes just days after automotive spy photographers captured heavily camouflaged test mules undergoing road trials in Austria and California. While South Korean buyers will be able to purchase the new Avante later this year, drivers in the United States will have to wait a bit longer. The redesigned compact sedan is expected to arrive on North American shores as the 2027 Hyundai Elantra model.
A Futuristic and Sharp Exterior Overhaul
The exterior styling of the 2027 Hyundai Elantra represents a bold departure from the outgoing model’s aesthetics. Hyundai designers replaced the previous generation’s wide, sweeping grille with a heavily overhauled front fascia. The new look features an aggressive, angular jawline that gives the vehicle a more grounded and commanding road presence. The headlights have been significantly pinched down into thin, perpendicular lines that seamlessly follow the contours of the car’s bodywork.

Moving along the side, the dramatic transformations continue. Hyundai has chosen to ditch the distinctive Z-shaped character creases that defined the doors of the previous generation. In their place are clean, straight lines and much more defined front and rear fenders, which perfectly complement the angular styling of the front end. The greenhouse area has also been reworked; the front and rear side windows now blend together with black trim on the B-pillar, while the C-pillar stands out in body-matching paint to isolate a small triangular rear window. Newly designed five-spoke star-shaped wheels complete the jagged, aggressive side profile.
At the rear, the design takes inspiration from the current Elantra but applies a boxier, cleaner execution with fewer chaotic angles. The new taillight assembly mimics the perpendicular theme of the headlights, featuring sharp vertical light signatures along the fenders connected by a clean horizontal light bar running across the trunk lid. Additionally, the integrated ducktail spoiler from the previous generation remains a key feature, though its edges have been sharpened to match the rest of the sedan’s updated design language.
Tech-Focused and Clutter-Free Cabin Design
Inside the cabin, Hyundai has implemented a driver-focused, minimalist layout that prioritizes modern technology. The instrument cluster has been drastically shrunk down to a thin, low-profile bar positioned near the base of the windshield. This setup opens up the driver’s forward visibility while drawing more attention to the massive central infotainment touchscreen. This primary display dominates the center dashboard and runs Hyundai’s latest Pleos Connect infotainment system.

The updated Pleos Connect system introduces advanced connectivity features, including an interactive artificial intelligence chatbot named Gleo. To free up valuable storage space within the center console, Hyundai relocated the physical gear selector from the console to a stalk mounted directly behind the steering wheel. This design change creates a cleaner look and provides more room for wireless charging and storage cubbies.
While Hyundai has significantly reduced the overall button count inside the new Elantra, the automaker has thankfully retained physical controls for core functions. Drivers will still find dedicated tactile buttons and knobs for the climate control system and media adjustments nestled neatly directly beneath the primary touchscreen. This blend of touchscreens and physical buttons ensures a user-friendly experience without sacrificing modern aesthetics.
Updated Powertrain Options and Performance
Under the hood, the 2027 Hyundai Elantra will offer buyers a choice between traditional gasoline-only and highly efficient hybrid powertrains. The standard gasoline engine remains the familiar and reliable 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine currently found in the existing Elantra lineup. This engine is designed for daily commuters looking for balanced efficiency and performance.

For those seeking improved fuel economy and a bit more punch, the hybrid version receives an exciting update. The 2027 Elantra Hybrid will feature a new two-motor 1.6-liter engine configuration capable of producing a combined 155 horsepower. This represents a noticeable upgrade in both technology and output over the outgoing hybrid model, promising an engaging driving experience.
As of the initial reveal in South Korea, Hyundai has not shared any official details regarding a sport-tuned N-Line variant or a high-performance Elantra N model. However, performance enthusiasts remain hopeful that the brand will introduce these sportier iterations later in the vehicle’s life cycle to match the aggressive new exterior styling.
