SpeedSUVs.com – Legendary automotive designer Ian Callum has officially revealed his latest design masterpieces, offering a modern reimagining of the iconic Jaguar XJ220 and its track-focused racing sibling, the XJ220-C. Created through his independent design house, Callum Designs, these striking new concepts pay direct homage to one of the most celebrated supercars of the 1990s. The reveal coincides with the eve of the historic XJ220’s 35th anniversary, celebrating a vehicle that once redefined the limits of production car performance.
The Legacy of the Jaguar XJ220
To understand the significance of Callum’s new design study, one must look back at the original Jaguar XJ220. Originally developed as a collaborative effort between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR), the mid-engine supercar captured the imagination of enthusiasts worldwide. Upon its release, the XJ220 achieved a recorded top speed of 217 mph, cementing its place in automotive history as the fastest production car in the world at the time.

Ian Callum, who has penned some of the most beautiful cars in modern history-including the Aston Martin DB7 and the Jaguar F-Type-was deeply involved in the aesthetic legacy of the brand. Decades later, his eponymous studio has revisited this legendary machine to see how its distinctive silhouette can be translated into the modern era using contemporary design principles.
A Modern Interpretation of a Classic Silhouette
So far, Callum Designs has only released a limited selection of images, focusing on the side profile and the rear three-quarters of the vehicle. However, these previews are more than enough to highlight key styling updates while maintaining the spirit of the original vehicle. The iconic, sweeping egg-shaped window cutouts make a triumphant return, preserving the familiar cabin shape that defined the 1990s supercar.

Despite these similarities, several modern adjustments have been made to the bodywork. The rear fenders have been flattened out, presenting a contrast to the original XJ220’s highly fluid, rounded rear shape. Additionally, the side vents and overall profile of the new concept share a strong family resemblance with the Jaguar C-X75, a hybrid supercar concept that Callum designed back in 2010. While the C-X75 famously featured a prominent S-duct on its hood, this new XJ220 concept refines those lines into a cohesive, modern package.
The Track-Ready XJ220 GT1 Concept
Alongside the road-going version, Callum Designs also introduced a racing-inspired counterpart named the XJ220 GT1. This model is a direct nod to the XJ220-C, which was originally built to compete in the prestigious GT class of international sports car racing.

The XJ220 GT1 concept introduces several aggressive aerodynamic enhancements, including a prominent front splitter and a massive rear wing designed to generate substantial downforce. The execution of the bodywork is highly integrated; Callum’s design tricks the eye into believing the entire vehicle was sculpted from a single, solid block of metal. The body panels flow seamlessly into one another, with the rear spoiler’s upright supports sprouting directly out of the muscular rear haunches of the car.
From Concept to Reality: Will It Be Built?
Currently, Callum Designs categorizes both of these models as “portfolio projects” or design studies. This means there is no active plan for mass production. However, the design house has strongly hinted that the project does not have to remain purely digital. For an exceptionally motivated and wealthy client, the studio is fully capable of turning these concepts into a bespoke, road-going reality. Until a collector steps forward to fund a one-off build, automotive enthusiasts can marvel at this modern tribute to one of Britain’s greatest supercar achievements.
