Toyota Investing $3.6 Billion to Move Tacoma Production to Texas

Toyota is investing $3.6 billion to expand its San Antonio facility, doubling its size to bring Tacoma pickup production back to Texas and create 2,000 jobs.

SpeedSUVs.com — Toyota has officially announced a massive $3.6 billion investment to shift the majority of its Tacoma mid-size pickup production from Mexico back to the United States. This significant move marks a major homecoming for the highly popular truck, which will soon be assembled at Toyota’s existing manufacturing facility in San Antonio, Texas.

A Massive Expansion in San Antonio

The multi-billion-dollar investment will fund a massive physical expansion of the San Antonio assembly plant. Toyota plans to add approximately 2.5 million square feet of space to the facility. This expansion will more than double the footprint of the current plant, which currently stands at 2.2 million square feet. The massive construction project is scheduled to take place over the next four years, with a target completion date set for 2030. Once the project is finished, the upgraded plant will feature an entirely new, state-of-the-art assembly line dedicated specifically to Tacoma production.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

Beyond the physical expansion of the factory, this shift represents a major economic boost for the regional Texas workforce. Toyota announced that the addition of the new production line will create approximately 2,000 new, high-paying jobs at the San Antonio facility. This employment surge highlights the automaker’s commitment to investing in local manufacturing talent as it ramps up its domestic production capabilities for its bestselling truck lineup.

Understanding the Tacoma’s Production History

The relocation of Tacoma production marks another chapter in the mid-size truck’s manufacturing history. Prior to 2021, production of the Tacoma was split between the San Antonio plant and two manufacturing facilities located in Mexico. However, when the current fourth-generation Tacoma launched in 2024, Toyota consolidated all assembly operations in Mexico. Since then, the truck has been built exclusively south of the border. By 2030, this dynamic will change once again as the Texas plant prepares to reclaim its role in assembling the popular pickup.

Impact on Mexican Operations

While the relocation will phase out Tacoma assembly at Toyota’s plant in Baja, Mexico, not all Mexican manufacturing operations will be affected. The automaker confirmed that Tacoma trucks built at its Guanajuato facility will continue production without disruption. This strategic split ensures that Toyota maintains a balanced manufacturing footprint across North America while shifting the bulk of its volume back to the United States.

Production Capacity and Future Outlook

According to industry reports, the newly expanded portion of the San Antonio plant is expected to have an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles. This will significantly boost the overall output of the Texas campus. To put this in perspective, the existing San Antonio plant is already a major hub of production, having manufactured 197,506 vehicles last year. The current facility handles the production of the Toyota Tundra full-size pickup truck and the Toyota Sequoia full-size SUV. By adding the Tacoma back to the mix, Toyota is solidifying the San Antonio plant as a powerhouse for its truck and SUV lineup in North America.
